Zombie Aftermath – When zombies come – be ready!
FEMA and the CDC has a fun new way of teaching the importance of zombie emergency preparedness!
You might be asking “What is up with zombies?” I ask the same thing about mustaches. The difference between the two is one could be a real pandemic and one is just annoying.
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) realized the need for preparedness and put together a document to reference Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse in case one would occur. Here are some additional pointers that were woefully omitted:
Figure out what type of zombies you are confronted with.
There are many types of zombies: slow moving “walkers” who are affected by the elements, rage-induced zombies looking to destroy anything in their path, super-human zombies who are able to do things above and beyond anything a living human can do, etc. You want to hope for slow moving zombies as they make easier targets. Study up on zombies by watching the abundant amount of television shows and movies dedicated to them; they are your tutorials.
The best offense is a good defense.
Regardless of what type of zombie you will be dealing with, they have an attribute you do not: they never will get tired. All they want is you. So you need to get into physical and emotional shape to outlast them. Take up jogging (and dodging moving targets). Build up strength by chopping wood. NFL athletes are good at dodging and jumping over things; consider training like one.
Be able to survive on only what you can carry.
While a preparedness kit the size of plastic tote might hold everything you need, you won’t be able to carry it for long. Everything you need should fit into a bag small enough to carry on your body without being bulky. Zombies can grab at bulky.
Learn how to drive a dirt bike.
They are easy to maneuver over any terrain and require a small amount of gas. While a giant reinforced tank sounds like a good idea, they get stuck easily and require a lot of gas.
Keep your eyes and ears open. At all times. No matter what.
There is always a zombie hidden someplace. Don’t believe me? Watch any zombie movie.
From FEMA and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on Preparedness for the Zombie Apocalypse – Hey kids, there are all kinds of emergencies out there that we can prepare for. Take a zombie apocalypse for example. That’s right, I said z-o-m-b-i-e a-p-o-c-a-l-y-p-s-e. You may laugh now, but when it happens you’ll be happy you read this, and hey, maybe you’ll even learn a thing or two about how to prepare for a real emergency.
Are you 10 to 17 years old? Do you make a difference in your community’s disaster preparedness? Are you ready to survive the coming zombie plague? Or do you know someone who fits that description?
The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is looking for youth leaders who are dedicated to public service, and who want to impact national disaster preparedness, to join the National Youth Preparedness Council.
To make sure FEMA doesn’t screw this up, we want a few skilled zombie survivalists on the team. That means YOU!
Youth can apply on their own, or they can be nominated by individuals who are familiar with their preparedness activities.
Here’s a great way to form your anti-zombie troops:
What it is A zombie apocalypse party utilizes an impending ‘zombie apocalypse’ to help educate your school and community how to prepare for disasters like a zombie outbreak. Attendees can dress in their best zombie costumes and enjoy their choice of games, snacks or other fun activities while you educate them about ways to survive a zombie outbreak. Your group can also charge an entrance fee and donate the proceeds to the Red Cross!
How it helps Educating the public on emergency preparedness is an important
mission of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the American Red Cross because having an emergency plan can make a big difference during a disaster. Your event will give attendees the chance to have fun while learning about ways to take charge before a disaster strikes. If you choose to charge an entrance fee, make sure to tell guests the money raised will help fund the local chapter’s work in serving the community.
Before beginning, contact your local Red Cross chapter or Service to the Armed Forces
(SAF) station for assistance. You can search for your local
chapter by zip code on redcross.org – when you call the chapter, ask to
speak to someone who works with youth volunteers. They will be able to guide
you to available resources that can make this an impactful and successful
event. Once you have established contact with your chapter, there are three
steps you should complete to begin:
1. Time and location – Pick a date and secure a place. You can hold this
gym, community center, or local restaurant – view timeline resource for
2. Event activities – Decide on preparedness activities you want to have
at your event. Plan to host booths or stations where your group can
distribute preparedness information. Find more activity ideas in the timeline resource. Be sure to determine an admission fee for the event if you are
charging; $5-$10 is a good range.
3. Send invitations – Invite people to your zombie apocalypse party in person and online. Hang flyers up around school and in your neighborhood. Share information during the morning announcements or home room at school. Utilize your group’s social media accounts to get the word out and ask group members to spread the word on their personal accounts. You can also team up with other organizations from your school or community to get even more students involved with the event.
With the details set, it’s easy to hold your zombie apocalypse party! Just complete the following steps and you’ll have a big impact on your school and community’s preparedness:
•Encourage all your club/group members who are volunteering at the event to dress up as zombies! Secure the appropriate supplies to complete all of your activities. Even with a group of the walking dead, you’ll want to keep the party lively with music and games that encourage preparedness
• Work with your chapter to get preparedness information to distribute – ask the
chapter to share information about potential disasters in your town like flooding,
tornadoes, or hurricanes.
• Ask the chapter to also share information about volunteer opportunities with
• If you have a laptop on hand, show a “Zombie Invasion–Disaster
” video created by the Red Cross Los Angeles Region also listed in the resource section.
• Encourage attendees to download the Red Cross Mobile Apps on their smart
phones. Give small prizes to attendees who show you a Red Cross Mobile App on their smart phone.
